History of the Gastroenterology Research GroupBased on a report prepared by Dr. Kirsner (J. Clin. Gastroenterol., 25, 667-677, 1997), the GRG was established in 1955 due to the combination of several factors. The main driving force for establishing the organization was the desire from younger AGA members in academic centers to have a forum for the discussion of scientific issues and new research problems in digestive diseases. Prior to this time the AGA was committed mainly to clinical studies. The American Society for Clinical Investigation meeting included very few presentations relevant to the field of gastroenterology. Forces to form the Gastroenterology Research Group seem to have come together after the AGA meeting held on May 1955 with the efforts of Basil Hirschowitz, E.C. Texter and J.B. Kirsner. The initial GRG meeting was held in Thorne Hall at Northwestern University in November of 1955. Approximately 150 physicians attended this initial meeting which lasted for 3 days and covered a variety of topics relevant to gastrointestinal biology. The group next met in Haddon Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey in April of 1956 with the American Federation for Clinical Research. This meeting was successful as well and approximately 300 physicians attended the meeting. Subsequently, the AGA welcomed the GRG to have the Gastroenterology Research Forum at its annual meeting and this has continued to the present time.
